i think for me the unique difficulty in nailing the Stede Voice is partially that he does actually say things like “amongst” and “dramatic upsets” and “immoderate use of the citrus” in casual conversation except that they’re seamlessly woven in with things like “a whopper” and “yeah right” and “it was whatever” and striking that balance can be pretty hard

but the other thing is that a lot of his voice’s distinctiveness happens in the way rhys darby delivers his lines. i’m of the understanding that he’s done some voice acting work, so maybe that’s influencing his habits here, but stede’s speech is brimming with inflection, like, virtually all the time, even for lines in private one-on-one conversations that call for very low levels of energy

it creates the impression, to me, of someone giving a presentation on something they’re passionate about while acutely aware that the audience in front of them is losing interest. a kind of subtextual preemptive “i already know you think what i’m saying right now is stupid and useless, and that i’m stupid and useless, but! listen to me! listen to me! HEAR ME OUT!!!” like if he treats every word that comes out of his mouth as though it’s interesting and important, maybe his audience will consider the possibility that he’s saying something worth listening to. like going “MmMMm!” while making a show of eating a gross-looking vegetable in front of a kid who refuses to try it. actually, now that i think about it, his children were probably the first people in his life whose attention made him feel like he was actually being taken 100% seriously when he spoke. yeah i can see that coloring how he interacts with the crew at the beginning of the series

just read the new mutants issue where Charles chose to stay behind in space and my god the juxtaposition between Charles trusting Erik and Erik joining the hellfire club and wondering at his own trust worthiness. I wonder how much of Charles decision was him ultimately trying to avoid the fact that his first class had seemingly betrayed mutant kind and not be willing to face them and how much of it was Dani and Illyana's reaction to him having Karma mind control Illyana. the fact that Illyana was depending on him to ease her mind through limbo and in choosing to stay he forced karma to do it instead, probably fucking up their relationship in the process.

I love him, this is crazy, how much of this is him trying to runaway and how much is this him not trusting himself to fix things and how much is it just him trusting Erik?

what is your favorite film of all time?

Gotta be my most beloved Lawrence of Arabia <3 I think its genuinely one of, if not the best films of all time in general, but personally, its been pretty influential in my life and interests. ITS SO BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING AND GOOD AND GORGEOUS AND COOL AND CINEMATIC AND I THINK ABOUT IT EVERY DAY AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH....I mean it's the header of my blog for a reason! Maybe I should go watch it again...

2. what movie do you wish you could unwatch?

Well you see, even if I dislike a film, I sometimes enjoy the experience of it still bcs it ended up being funny to watch with other people, since I often end up commentating over movies with my family especially. However recently, I watched the movie Jerry Maguire, and it bored me so fucking bad that I couldn't even bear to put it on my Letterboxd. Funnily enough, I also regret watching Eyes Wide Shut just as much. Do I just hate Tom Cruise 😭😭😭

After examining the last three character couples that have lodged themselves in my autistic brain I can now see that my type is: Tortured Murdergirl on a righteous sometimes self-destructive mission who underneath it all just wants to be happy and love people, and comparatively happy Artboy whos also been through shit but has convinced himself it doesn't bother him and finds a life mission in Murdergirl and her cause to the point where he will unflinchingly commit violence for her.

Along the way somewhere Murdergirl becomes terrified that she's corrupting Artboy by dragging him into her world despite the fact that it was his idea to join her in the first place and he has made it obvious he would die with no regrets if it was with/in service to her, but he's also often the only thing in the world that brings her any comfort and letting him go would destroy her beyond repair so it becomes a thing about whether she can accept help and love from others and stop being such a martyr or whether she will destroy herself to find absolution (spoiler alert: she picks love). Artboy, on the other hand, finds his self-worth by emulating Murdergirl's best qualities (selflessness, bravery, an enduring love for the world despite being hurt by it) in himself and in doing so, becomes a warrior in his own right.

Or maybe this barely exists in the text and I just wrote the same story 3 times but what can I say, I have a type ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OHHH ryo expyism is my field of study. ok. yes. what i believe is that a vital part of the history of ryo expies is understanding that, while there are many direct descendants, a pretty important branch is being one thru kaworu nagisa, who is a direct expy of ryo but arguably inspired as many expies of himself as ryo did.

i then suspect killua to be an offshoot of kaworu, so a 2nd gen expy. they follow the dark haired protag/light haired (gay) bestie formula. it is maybe also important to mention though that the likelihood of togashi having read devilman is supremely high since the manga was incredibly big in japan, and because devilman's influences on shounen in general but esp on yu yu hakusho and the CAA cannot be overstated.
